Who, What, Where, When and Why!
Who
My name is Jo. I have used different slings or carriers to carry all 3 of my children and loved all the fabulous benefits of 'babywearing'. I launched Carlisle Sling Library on 4th July 2015. I then launched my carrying conultancy, Carried Close Carlisle in April 2016.
Originally from Colchester, I moved to Carlisle in 1995, and live with my partner Gordon and our three children Romilly (7), Delaney (5) and Addison (3) in Denton Holme.
Long before I was a mother I had heard about using slings and carriers, it was an idea I liked and something I wanted to try with my own children.
I undertook Peer Supporter training with School of Babywearing in May 2015, and I completed my 4 day Slingababy Carrying Consultant Course in March 2016.
What (is a carrying consultant?)
A carrying consultant is a person who has undergone substantial training covering all the aspects involved with carrying a baby-anatomy of the child, anatomy of the carer, the physical effects of carrying, the mechanics involved in using a carrier/sling, carrying safely, overview of individual brands of slings and carriers and how to use carriers and slings in different ways.
Where and when
Sling meets and library sessions
Our meets are very social and its a great opportunity to meet other parents, in particular other babywearing parents and share experiences. The Sling library is available at regular meets and socials at different venues in Carlisle. Please also take a look at the Carlisle Sling Library facebook page and website for more information about the babywearing community in the Carlisle area. Make sure you subscribe to events on facebook!
Sling Consultancy
The sling meets can be very busy, so to enable you to have individual one to one time with me, tailored to your needs and dedicated to you, I offer bookable consults (from 20 minutes to 90 minutes depending on your needs).
I offer bookable 'troubleshoot' appointments where you can have a 20 minute individual slot with me, either to troubleshoot your own sling/carrier, or to try some different slings/carriers with a view to hiring one.
I also offer longer appointments, either at your home or mine, where we can discuss your carrying needs in more detail and you will have an opportunity to try more slings/carriers or different carries.
Please check the calendar for full details, or contact me using the link on this site, or via messenger on facebook.
Why
I set up the library, and then my carrying consultancy to enable parents/carers to carry their children safely and comfortably for as long as they want to. Carrying a baby in a sling or carrier is a skill that in many cultures is passed on through the generations, but this is not widely the case in England. My role is to equip you with the skills you need, paying particular attention to safety and the requirements of your own unique family circumstances. I have loved carrying all three of my children and hope to help as many people as possible experience this too.
Carrying your baby close has many physical, emotional and developmental benefits for you and your child and I would love to share these with you and help you realise some of these benefits.
